What exactly is good coaching? Should everyone have one at least once in their life? And when is the right time? Which approach is right for me? Where can I find the right treatment? Now you might say that it depends on the topic and whether it's about professional or personal challenges. But, on the other hand, isn't it true that feelings of being overwhelmed, helplessness or powerlessness are common in everyday life? and play into the job? The boundaries are becoming blurred, and not just since the pandemic and home office times.
To answer the first question: it is difficult to distinguish between good and bad coaching and it is almost impossible for a layperson to judge. So here's a little guide: an experienced coach doesn't just work on the behavioural level for more complex problems, but goes one step deeper: into the personality. The sales manager, for example, who has communication problems with her team, could now go through each difficult situation with a coach to find out what is causing the individual conflicts. This takes time, and yes, sometimes it is enough. In the long term, however, only the common denominator behind the problems and reflection on one's own personality will lead to the client's issue being recognised and dealt with in depth.
Those who have really good friends can count themselves lucky
This brings us to the second and third question: not everyone who is carrying something around with them needs to be coached. Sometimes a chat between close friends is balm for the soul. Anyone who has someone to listen to is lucky. But often, as you will know, a ping-pong situation arises. While you actually want to talk about your concerns, the other person responds with "I know that..." or "That's how it is with me...". You quickly run out of steam. Now it's better to seek out coaching where you receive professional support and guidance.
The best are recommendations
Yes, and where do you find that? This is probably the most difficult consideration. There are providers a dime a dozen and everyone promises to take the best approach. The only thing that really helps here is good old word-of-mouth. Ask people you know about their experiences. And then simply take the time for yourself during coaching. That's the first step, and it's a good one!
